Rural Stiwdio 2026
Peak’s 2026 Rural Stiwdio programme explores a central question from The Living Usk, Peak’s long-term creative exploration of the River Usk: How do communities shape rivers and how do rivers shape communities?
In winter, young people from Credu Young Carers worked with ceramicist Melanie Van der Velde to explore their relationships with rivers through clay, making ceramic objects that reflected how the river moves through their lives.
In spring, young people at Peak and from Blaenau Gwent Positive Futures worked with artist Vivian Ross-Smith to explore our connection to rivers as ‘bodies of water’. Together, they created wearable textile pieces inspired by motifs from our valleys, experimented with collective movement and performance in the Clydach Gorge, and documented their experience through photography and zine making.
In summer, workshops will be led by artist and researcher Iman Datoo. We’ll be exploring the River Usk through the ceramic fragments found in and along its course, asking how materials hold stories of time and place.
In autumn, workshops will be led by writer Lowri Hedd-Vaughan, inspired by her summer research residency through which she explored questions including: How do the waters want to be? How might we better be with them?

Mae rhaglen Rural Stiwdio Peak 2026 yn archwilio cwestiwn canolog The Living Usk, archwiliad creadigol hirdymor Peak o’r Afon Wysg: Sut mae cymunedau’n ffurfio afonydd a sut mae afonydd yn ffurfio cymunedau.
Yn ystod y gaeaf, bu pobl ifanc o Credu, grŵp o Ofalwyr Ifanc, yn gweithio gyda’r crochenydd Melanie Van der Velde er mwyn archwilio eu perthynas gydag afonydd mewn clai, gan greu gwrthrychau serameg sy’n adlewyrchu’r modd y mae’r afon yn symud trwy eu bywydau.
Yn y Gwanwyn, bu pobl ifanc Peak a phobl ifanc o Blaenau Gwent Positive Futures yn gweithio gyda’r artist Vivian Ross-Smith i archwilio ein cysylltiad gydag afonydd fel ‘bodies of water’. Gyda’i gilydd, buon nhw’n creu darnau tecstilau gwisgadwy wedi eu hysbrydoli gan fotiffau o’r cymoedd, yn arbrofi gyda symud ar y cyd, yn perfformio yng Ngheunant Clydach, a dogfennu eu profiadau drwy ffotograffiaeth a chreu zines.
Yn ystod yr haf, bydd yr artist a’r ymchwilydd Iman Datoo yn arwain gweithdai Rural Stiwdio. Byddwn yn archwilio’r Afon Wysg drwy edrych ar yr olion serameg y gellir dod o hyd iddynt ar hyd cwrs yr afon, gan archwilio’r modd y mae deunyddiau yn cynnal hanesion ynglŷn ag amser a lle.
Yn ystod yr hydref, bydd y gweithdai’n cael eu harwain gan y sgwennwr Lowri Hedd-Vaughan, wedi eu hysbrydoli gan ei phreswyliad ymchwil dros yr haf lle’r oedd hi’n archwilio cwestiynau megis: Sut mae’r afonydd yn dymuno byw? Sut allwn ni fyw’n fwy cytûn â nhw?
