Matter at Hand
Matter at hand is the design practice of Lewis Jones, a designer working across architecture, material science and hands-on construction. His work explores the materials and processes that shape our built environment, using waste, industrial by-products, and natural resources to develop more equitable ways of building. Lewis co-founded the architecture and design collective Assemble (2010) and co-led a long-term collaboration with residents of the Granby Four Streets in Liverpool to help rebuild their neighbourhood— a project awarded the Turner Prize (2015). He later developed Granby Workshop, a neighbourhood-based ceramics manufacturer, and undertook a PhD at the University of Liverpool (2024) focused on low-carbon ceramic build.

Mae ei waith yn archwilio’r deunyddiau a’r prosesau sy’n siapio ein hamgylchedd adeiledig, ganddefnyddio gwastraff, isgynnyrch diwydiannol, ac adnoddau naturiol er mwyn datblygu ffyrdd tecach o adeiladu. Lewis yw cyd-sylfaenydd y casgleb pensaernïaeth a dylunio Assemble (2010) ac roedd yn gyd-arweinydd ar gydweithrediadhirdymor gyda phreswylwyr y Granby Four Streets yn Lerpŵl i helpu ailadeiladu eu cymdogaeth— project a dderbyniodd y Turner Prize (2015). Yn ddiweddarach roedd yn gyfrifol am ddatblygu’r Granby Workshop, gwneuthurwr seramegcymdogol, ac astudiodd PhD ym Mhrifysgol Lerpŵl (2024) oedd yn canolbwyntio ar ddeunyddiau adeiladu carbon-isel serameg sy’n cael ei lunio o wastraff mwynol y DU.
